stevhoa:

Nausicaä was the second anime that I ever saw. The first was Ōtomo Katsuhiro’s Akira. The two movies emerge from the expansive decade of the 1980s, and both feature postapocalyptic visions of a world of out-of-control technology and human hubris. Both are masterpieces that taught the rest of the world to see Japanese animation in a new light. I teach Akira and Nausicaä, and each has stood the test of time. Yet to my mind, Nausicaä cuts deeper and lingers longer. This is due not only to the sheer beauty of the film and the unforgettable character of Nausicaä herself but also to its truly radical vision that a plant, a girl, and an insect all deserve to inherit the Earth.
